About us

Boulder Tea Hut is a branch of Global Tea Hut, which shares a lineage in Cha Dao, the Way of Tea.

Our intention with Boulder Tea Hut is to provide a space for deep practice in this lineage such that we may all live in closer alignment with the Dao.

At the invitation of Wu De, Boulder Tea Hut was co-founded in March 2023 by Rev. Bunan Brown, a Zen Priest in the Hollow Bones lineage, and Stephan van der Mersch.

Boulder Tea Hut has a ceremonial space and gallery in central Boulder, and a small but exquisite ceremonial Teahouse in the nearby mountains, the Sunshine Springs Teahouse.

In addition to providing public ceremonies, with the blessing of Global Tea Hut lineage holder Wu De we will be sharing the basics of practice for those who wish to begin their own Tea practice. Our space is intended to support dedicated students of Cha Dao in developing their skills to the level that they can join us in serving in this Teahouse. We aspire that this space will grow far beyond us.

We are deeply grateful to the many Chajin whose hands have helped this Teahouse come to life, and to the dedication of Wu De and his team in Taiwan who work tirelessly in sharing these practices.

Space Holders

Bunan Brown is a Zen priest in the Rinzai Zen Hollow Bones lineage. He specializes in somatic attachment repair and seems to have a penchant for building spaces for him to meditate and drink tea.

Stephan is proficient in Mandarin and lived in Taiwan for some years. He has deep ties to the culture of the region which support his journey in the Way of Tea.

Stephan had Tea for the first time with Wu De at Tea Sage Hut in Taiwan in early 2016, connected with Bunan around Tea that Spring, and they promptly began construction on the Sunshine Springs Teahouse, a handcrafted labor of love spanning six years. They have hosted Wu De in Boulder twice, studied with him around the world, and have passionately drunk, studied, and shared Tea since then.
